Desert House

In the late ’80s, artist Beverly Doolittle and her husband Jay decided they wanted a house on their 10 beautiful, naked acres in Joshua Tree and they tracked down super-organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, who immediately fell in love with the site.

Inspired by the rugged and hard surroundings the exterior of the house seems like an extension of it – the property seems to disseminate among the rocks and stones. The Desert House was completed in 1993 but its interior designer, John Vugrin, spent another few years with the finishing touches. It is an otherworldly space made of concrete, steel and glass, nestled into a rocky hillside in the Mojave Desert. The structure has 26 columns that fan out of its rooflines like wings. Its heavy walls and rib-like structure make it look like a robust shelter during desert storms. Is it because of the location, or its shy nature, but it’s not clear how such a beautiful and unique house managed to stay under the radar all this many years.
