During the seventies when hippie cultural movemente was very active there was not even more popular vans for travel and socializing of Volkswagen “Type 2” van. Built from 1950 to 2013, the “hippie wagon” is among the cars that every Volkswagen enthusiast wants to own.
Indonesian mechanic, Vaha Pamungkas with his team of 30 workers managed to transform two “Type 2” vans into one with an overall length of 7.6 meters. It is by far the longest van of this type in the world. The existing diesel engine with 1.5 liters was not sufficient for larger chassis, so they installed two-liter engine. Overall the changes have cost them about £20,000 (400 million Indonesian Rupiah).
Known as one of the most famous hippie symbols, the Kombi was produced for a staggering 63 years. During this time, more than 10 million vans were built. In 2013, the vehicle was only manufactured in Brazil until the country’s new legislation brought it to an end, as they required every vehicle to have air bags and anti-lock braking.
